Despite denying the possibility of any new arrivals or departures during the transfer period, Mourinho decided signing Nemanja Matic is not enough. A new defender is now strongly linked to the Blues.

Saint Etienne’s Kurt Zouma is next in line to sign a contract with Chelsea. After sitting down with the Portuguese manager, the France U21 star has become desperate to move to London. According to Metro, the youngster is valued at £13million. His performances have caught the eye of several other Premier League teams. Liverpool and Manchester United also look interested in securing Zouma’s signature but it appears the Blues have a head start.

Mourinho personally called the 19 year old who was left deeply impressed by the Portuguese’s determination to get him to Stamford Bridge. After being interviewed, Zouma admitted even he was surprised to see a club as big as Chelsea taking so much interest in such a young player.

The France U21 international, who started his senior career in 2011 has only played for Saint-Etienne. Even if he is only 19 he has already managed 51 appearances for the French side.

Zouma looks like an excellent investment to make especially if Chelsea plan on sticking to their new found policy which gives a lot more credit to youngsters rather than to experienced players. After Terry, Cole and Lampard leave, the Blues will probably compete with Arsenal for the lowest age average in the Premier League.
