Mourinho Hails Atletico Domination

According to the Guardian video report, Jose Mourinho has acknowledged the quality of football by Atletico Madrid, and has suggested Chelsea were undone by a touch of class by the Spanish side managed by Diego Simeone.

Chelsea had hectic week behind them that included the fates of two titles and three matches in two competitions. The first leg of the semi final took place in Madrid where Mourinho set up a tight knit defensive unit that Atletico found impossible to break down, resulting in a goal-less draw. With the away goals rule, the result was not ideal for the Blues. Mourinho’s men then took on Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday, and produced a spectacular display, resulting in an away win that kept them in the Barclays Premier League title hunt. Then came the second leg of the Champions League, where despite having all their players fit and performing, Chelsea could not match up to the quality of an attacking Atletico side.

Mourinho’s constant worry about the lack of quality in the striking department showed in the performance, as neither of Fernando Torres (with one exception where he finished with aplomb but sadly offered little else), Demba Ba or Samuel Eto’o could provide the finishing touches to attacks. Eden Hazard was well marked by the Atletico defence, and did not give an extra inch to the talented Belgian who was at fault for not tracking back for Atletico first goal which Mourinho highlighted, saying that Hazard is not yet ready to sacrifice for his team and reportedly, Hazard responded in the French media saying that Chelsea were not set up to attack and play football – comments which are unlikely to go down well with his boss.

According to Mourinho the game changed in a minute in the second half where Courtois saved a brilliant header from JT and then a minute later Eto’o unfortunately gave away a penalty which was viewed fairly by all parties for once and Costa confidently put Madrid ahead. So from Chelsea almost being 2-1 up one minute they were 2-1 down the next minute and fighting an uphill battle- chasing the game against an Atletico side at the top of their game who were far from looking to play conservatively but activley pressing high up the pitch and playing a high-intensity game which the Blues could not live with and the Spaniards never looked back going on to score again, running out deserving 3-1 winners.
