Morata Dreams of World Cup Place

Alvaro Morata hopes his performances for Chelsea next season will be enough to earn him a place in Spain’s 2018 World Cup squad. The forward has made 20 appearances for Spain since his debut in 2014, scoring 9 goals. He is not always his nation’s favoured striker, but after signing for Chelsea to replace Diego Costa, Morata will hope he can do the same in the Spanish squad.

The 24-year-old joined Chelsea earlier in the summer for a fee of around £70m from Real Madrid, where he often played as a bit part player. Morata has already made his first appearance during the 3-2 pre-season friendly defeat to Bayern Munich on Wednesday, and the forward says having Spanish team-mates Cesar Azpilicueta, Cesc Fabregas and Pedro at Chelsea has helped him to settle in.

“It’s an incredible emotion,” Morata told ESPN on joining Chelsea from Real.

“I committed to sign for Chelsea because it’s one of the biggest clubs in Europe.”

“I’m very happy to be part of the Chelsea family. I have a lot of friends here and it’s easy for adaptation and I’m very happy.”

Morata says one of his main aims at Chelsea next season is to impress enough in order to be selected for the 2018 World Cup next summer.

“The first thing is to play here at Chelsea and if I make my work well probably I’ll go to the World Cup,” Morata added.

“It’s a dream the possibility of going to a World Cup. I can’t think now, I can only think about this season with Chelsea and I hope it’s a good full season.”
