Michael Owen Predicts The Result As Chelsea Take On Atletico Madrid

BT Sport pundit Michael Owen is backing Chelsea to progress to the quarter-finals of the Champions League this evening but he thinks the Blues may only scrape through.

After a 1-0 win over Atletico Madrid in the first leg, Thomas Tuchel’s side do have the advantage, but Owen feels the tactical setup of both teams will lead to the second game at Stamford Bridge ending in a draw:

“Since Thomas Tuchel’s arrival, the Blues have been pretty much rock solid at the back and another strong defensive performance will be required here. Tactically, I find this one fascinating, as Madrid are likely to be patient knowing that they could get caught out if they throw caution to the wind too early. With that in mind, I can see both sides cancelling each other out and Chelsea going through to the quarter-finals.”

Owen has gone with a 1-1 scoreline, with Chelsea going through 2-1 in aggregate. Fans would certainly take that result, although it would mean a nervy game with the tie on a knife-edge until the closing stages.

Considering the team’s excellent defensive record under Tuchel, you would hope that the Blues would be able to keep a clean sheet, but Atletico are dangerous on the counter-attack, as we saw when they beat Liverpool at Anfield in last season’s competition. Hopefully, they can get the result they need, without any real dramas as Owen predicts.
