Merson Predicts 21 Year Old Chelsea Ace Will ‘Struggle’ To Find The Back Of The Net

TV pundit Paul Merson is unconvinced that Tammy Abraham will be able to replicate his goalscoring form in the Championship with Chelsea in the Premier League.

The 21-year-old scored 26 goals in all competitions on loan at Aston Villa last season but Merson expects that he won’t be given the number of his chances he will need to score this campaign:

“Tammy Abraham is going to struggle. He’s not going to get many chances because Chelsea won’t be dominating teams like that every week. He missed a sitter in the Super Cup and he never looked like scoring his penalty in the shoot-out. I don’t think he looked up once.”

“It’s understandable because he’s only young. Everything was on his shoulders. But fair play to him for putting himself forward to take it. He obviously has confidence.”

Abraham has been profligate in front of goal so far but there have been some promising signs. His physicality is a major strength and he outmuscled Virgil van Dijk to create a chance for himself against Liverpool.

If you can do that against one of the best defenders in the world, he will no doubt offer a great deal to the Blues’ frontline this season.

Confidence is an important thing, and hopefully, his penalty miss in the shootout won’t affect him going forward. A goal against Leicester today would go some way to silencing the critics.
