Merson Praises Chelsea’s Kids And Predicts When They Could Begin Dominating English Football

TV pundit Paul Merson believes that Chelsea’s young squad are only two to three years away from dominating the Premier League, following a promising start under manager Frank Lampard.

The ex-Gunner said he was left very impressed despite the team losing to Liverpool last weekend, and he believes the club’s transfer ban could have been a blessing in disguise for the Blues:

“If you go through some of the players, you don’t know if this has been a plan or they’ve just fallen over it, but you’ve got to give credit to Frank Lampard.”

“If they don’t have the transfer embargo and Frank Lampard isn’t the manager these young kids are all out on loan, they’re all out on loan. I go through the Chelsea squad now and in two or three years this team will be dominating English football, dominating English football.”

It’s a bold statement from Merson, but the sheer number of talented players coming through the ranks at Cobham means there is every possibility it could happen.

With Mason Mount, Fikayo Tomori and Tammy Abraham already shining for the first team, Ruben Loftus-Cheek still to come back from injury, while Reece James and Callum Hudson-Odoi are looking like big talents close to making their breakthrough, the future is looking bright.

The fact that the likes of Billy Gilmour, Ethan Ampadu and Conor Gallagher are also coming through the ranks, it shows there could almost be a full starting eleven of young players playing for the first team soon.
