Merson Names The Two Teams That Chelsea Must Avoid In The Champions League Quarter Finals

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson believes Chelsea will reach the Champions League semi-finals if they avoid Manchester City and Bayern Munich in the next round.

Following recent performances, Merson says he is confident that Graham Potter‘s side can progress further in the competition as long as they are not drawn against the two tournament favourites:

“If the Champions League quarter-final draw goes their way, bar Man City and Bayern Munich, I don’t think too many teams will want to play Chelsea. If they don’t meet those two then I think they’ll get through to the semi-finals.”

It’s surprising that Merson doesn’t consider Champions League holders Real Madrid as a major threat. They are expected to qualify for the semis, having won 5-2 away at Liverpool in the first leg.

Napoli are also runaway leaders in Serie A and they thrashed Liverpool in the group stages so you would say that they would be ones to avoid as well.

In terms of the other potential quarter-finalists, though, the Blues should fancy their chances. They would be favourites to make it through if they do get the likes of Inter Milan, AC Milan or Benfica in the draw.
