Paul Merson was full of praise for Chelsea defender Thiago Silva’s performance in the 3-0 win over Burnley at the weekend.

Despite playing in difficult conditions away at Turf Moor, the Brazilian veteran came through the tricky encounter with flying colours and Merson says the 36-year-old had both of the Clarets’ strikers under wraps throughout the 90 minutes:

“Thiago Silva, you thought tester today, Burnley away with freezing cold gale-force wind. Rolls-Royce. Absolutely outstanding. Had both players in his pocket. Chris Wood and Ashley Barnes didn’t go near him, in the end, he was that dominant.”

After Silva made an error in the 3-3 draw against West Brom on his debut back in September, there was some concern whether the centre-back would be cut out for the rough and tumble of the Premier League.

However, he has begun to prove in recent weeks that he is more than up to the task, helping the Blues keep three clean sheets since the 3-3 draw against Southampton last month.

Considering the multiple trophies that Silva has won during his career, it is not a surprise that the Brazilian international’s class has shone through and it will be hoped that he can stay fit and help Chelsea’s backline stay watertight in the coming months.
