Merson Backs Controversial Choice To Be Chelsea’s Next Manager

Paul Merson thinks Arsene Wenger would be the ideal candidate to become Chelsea’s next manager if Maurizio Sarri is sacked.

The ex-Gunners midfielder believes that the Blues’ transfer ban, combined with the Frenchman’s propensity to back young players, could make him a good fit:

“If Chelsea’s transfer ban stands and they have to start using their lorryload of kids, that is suddenly a job Wenger could succeed at. He’s not afraid to play young players and he knows the league.”

Merson is the second former Arsenal player to say Wenger would be a good appointment for the Blues.

Last month, ex England goalkeeper David Seaman also made the same suggestion, but the club are likely to give Sarri more time to turn things around at Stamford Bridge.

The Italian has guided the Blues to the Europa League quarter-finals, while the club are still just three points off the top four.

However, a home draw against Wolves and an away defeat to Everton last time out have put the pressure right back on Sarri.

If the former Napoli coach does fall on his sword at some point, would Chelsea consider Wenger as a possible replacement? It would certainly be a controversial choice.
