Merson Backs Chelsea Legend For Coaching Role As He Complains That Things Are Just “Too Nice” Under Potter

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson believes Chelsea manager Graham Potter should add club legend John Terry to his coaching staff.

The former Blues captain is currently part of the academy at Cobham but he spent two and a half years serving as Aston Villa’s assistant manager. Merson thinks Terry could ruffle a few feathers in the dressing room:

“For me, I’d get John Terry involved now. John Terry’s at the club, get him on the bench, get in there, get someone who’s been there before, played the game and done it. And start volleying people around! He’s too nice. It’s too nice.”

You can’t really see Potter giving Terry a more prominent role. For one thing, the fact that he is a legend at the club means many fans would be calling for him to step up to become number one if results don’t go the right way.

It would effectively undermine Potter’s authority and, considering the precarious position he is already in, the Chelsea boss is unlikely to do anything that could put his job in any further jeopardy.

Merson is certainly correct that Terry would get stuck into the players, although (as we have seen with modern footballers) that doesn’t always lead to a positive outcome.
