Matt Law Provides New Update On Havertz As Chelsea Close In On Key Signing

The Daily Telegraph‘s Matt Law says it is a matter of ‘when’ rather than ‘if’ Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Kai Havertz moves to Chelsea this summer.

The journalist, who has built a reputation recently for offering reliable updates on the Blues, feels the German international will be moving to Stamford Bridge and the club will then move on to targeting new signings for the defence:

“When they get Kai Havertz over the line, which I think is a when rather than an if, I think the defensive positions, a left-back, potentially a centre back, and a goalkeeper will take a lot longer.”

It’s clear that Havertz has his heart set on a move to Chelsea, but the big obstacle remains the transfer fee. Reports in recent days suggest the two teams remain quite far apart in terms of an agreement.

Throughout the summer, Leverkusen have insisted that clubs pay €100m (£90m), while the Blues believe they can get him for £10m to £20m less.

With Havertz’s club having been knocked out of the Europa League, it was thought that negotiations for the German would accelerate but doesn’t appear to be the case.
