Matt Law Claims Chelsea Could Sign Bundesliga Star For A Bid 38M Less Than They Offered A Month Ago

Chelsea are very much still interested in signing RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol, according to the Daily Telegraph journalist Matt Law.

Before the transfer window shut last month, the Blues reportedly had a €90m (£77.6m) offer rejected for the Croatian international. The centre-back subsequently signed a new contract with Leipzig instead.

However, it is believed that a release clause was inserted into the agreement which means Gvardiol could be signed for a fee “in excess” of £40m (€45.9m). It effectively means the Blues could save around £38m if they do seal the player’s signature now.

A number of other teams have also been linked with the 20-year-old, including Manchester City, so it is by no means a done deal, but it appears discussions are underway which could see both Gvardiol and Christopher Nkunku arrive from Leipzig next year.

With Nkunku only expected to cost slightly more than €60m/£52.3m (due to his own release clause), Chelsea could be doing some excellent business.
