Marc Guehi: An In Depth Profile Of The Chelsea Youngster Who Could Break Into Lampard’s First Team Plans

Chelsea defender Marc Guehi was given his first-team debut by manager Frank Lampard in the 7-1 win against Grimsby Town last month and we may yet see more of the 19-year-old over the coming weeks and months.

The England Under 21 international is one to look out for after also being named on the bench for the games against Valencia and Brighton in September so what do you we know about him?

Guehi was born in the Ivory Coast but moved to the UK when he was very young. He joined Chelsea at the age of just seven, making his way up the youth ranks, playing mostly as a central defender.

The teenager made his debut for the Under 18s in 2015 and was part of the team that won the treble in the 2016/17 campaign. Off the back of those performances, he was included in the England squad for the 2018 Under 17 World Cup in India.

Guehi captained the side as England became world champions, beating Spain 5-2 in the final. Following that success, he then went on to feature prominently for Chelsea’s Under 18s under manager Jody Morris as they won the Under 18 Premier League title and the FA Youth Cup.

The centre-half also managed to get to the final of the UEFA Youth League with the Under 19s, but they lost 3-0 in the final to Barcelona with Guehi being substituted before the hour mark.

Last season, the defender moved up to the Under 23s, playing 20 times in Premier League 2. He also continued to play in the Youth League, but once again lost out in the final to Porto, despite knocking out holders Barca in the semi-finals.

Manager Maurizio Sarri recognised Guehi’s progress and named him on the bench for the final game of the campaign, in the 0-0 draw against Leicester City. He did not, though, get onto the pitch.

After being included in Lampard’s pre-season plans, he was rewarded with a start against Grimsby in the Carabao Cup. He also made his debut for England’s Under 21s last month with manager Aidy Boothroyd selecting him to start him in two European U21 Championship qualifiers.

Guehi played the full 90 minutes against both Turkey and Kosovo with England taking three points from both games. The centre-back’s next step will be to get his Premier League debut.

With Antonio Rudiger returning to fitness, he may have to wait for his opportunity, but with Andreas Christensen having picked up an injury on international duty, he could be named in matchday squads in upcoming matches.
