Manager Reveals Senegalese International Will ‘Join Chelsea’ As 22M Move Is Secured

Rennes manager Julien Stephan has confirmed that Edouard Mendy’s move to Chelsea is imminent. The Senegalese international has been heavily linked with a move to the Blues for a number of weeks but there has been no official confirmation about the transfer, leading to speculation that the move was in trouble.

However, there were further reports yesterday that the Blues had clinched the signing of the shot-stopper for £22m, and Stephan has said that Rennes are looking for a new goalkeeper to replace their departing number one. Speaking after the 2-1 win against Monaco last night, he said:

“We’re looking for a keeper, it’s no secret. Edouard will certainly leave us to join Chelsea. In this position, we need to get someone back very quickly, I cannot give you names since there is nothing definitive.”

Rennes were reportedly trying to get either Olivier Giroud or Fikayo Tomori included in the deal, but it is believed that no players will be moving in the other direction.

Mendy’s transfer should be officially announced shortly but manager Frank Lampard will have to choose between Kepa Arrizabalaga and Willy Caballero for this evening’s game against Liverpool.
