Maligned Chelsea Superstar Could Get Second Chance Under New Boss

Much-maligned Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku, who is currently out on loan with Inter Milan in Serie A, could get a second chance at Stamford Bridge under potential new boss Mauricio Pochettino [via The Daily Telegraph].

With a deal agreed in principle, Pochettino looks set to become the new head coach at Chelsea – his reign will likely begin at the start of the season, succeeding interim boss Frank Lampard.

Of course, this relies on a couple of hypothetical situations becoming reality. First of all, Pochettino would need to be officially appointed – secondly, Lukaku himself would need to publicly express a desire to play for Chelsea again.

The Belgian has had a pair of underwhelming spells at Chelsea. He initially joined the club in 2011, but failed to score a goal. In 2021, he made a sensational return to the club, but has scored just eight Premier League goals in 26 appearances since then.

Would things be different under Pochettino? Perhaps – but not necessarily because of the Argentinian’s managerial playing style, which has a heavy focus on pressing and fitness (two things Lukaku isn’t known for).

Instead, players such as Mykhailo Mudryk, Enzo Fernandez and Noni Madueke will have some in the box to aim for, should Lukaku choose to return. At 6ft 3 and with unparalleled physical strength, Lukaku is a brilliant target man.

Ultimately, it remains to be seen how Lukaku will fit into Pochettino’s system. He certainly has unfinished business with the Blues – but whether he wants to finish it or not is another story entirely.
