Makalele: Morata is at the top level

Former Blues midfielder Claude Makelele has praised the start to life Alvaro Morata has made at Chelsea, saying he does not doubt that the forward will continue his good form.

Chelsea signed Morata from Real Madrid in the summer for a club-record fee of around £60m. The Blues faced competition from Manchester United for the Spanish stars’ signature, but the new No.9 looks to have settled in well.

Despite a tough start to his Chelsea tenure, with a relatively poor pre-season and missing a penalty in the Community Shield defeat to Arsenal, the 24-year-old has gone from strength to strength since and has scored 7 goals since his arrival.

Makalele, the former Chelsea midfielder and France legend has been impressed with Morata’s start, and expects more to come.

“He’s a good player, strong player, competitor and international,” Makelele told Sky Sports.

“This is the top level. He was at the best team in the world Real Madrid, he scored goals there. He’s gone to Juventus, he scored goals there. Of course he will score goals at Chelsea.”

Morata’s good start to the season has taken an unfortunate turn after the striker pulled up with a hamstring injury during Chelsea’s 1-0 defeat to Manchester City last week. However, Makalele says the Spaniard will be very happy at Chelsea despite the great task that is ahead of him.

“It’s tough in the Premier League, very tough,” the former France midfielder added.

“I think he understands the Premier League. He understands also where he’s going to play, you want to give him more balls. I think he’s going to be happy at Chelsea, for sure.”
