Luke Shaw Signs Extension With Southampton Snubbing Arsenal & Chelsea

The 18-year old Luke Shaw has been considered as one of England’s brightest and most promising stars for the future as he has already broken into the Southampton first-team and has established his place at left-back. He is a product of the famed Southampton youth academy which has previously produced current stars like Arsenal’s Theo Walcott, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain along with Tottenham Hotspurs’ Gareth Bale.

Shaw had a highly successful campaign last time around on a personal level. So much so, that he was being courted by the big guns of the league like Arsenal, Chelsea and even Manchester United. Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger was keen on the teenager and unconfirmed reports even suggest that he tried to sign him in the January transfer window.

Chelsea themselves had a keen interest in him as they viewed him as a natural long-term successor to Ashley Cole, at club level and even in the England national team. Manager Jose Mourinho too was reportedly planning to prepare a move for him in the latter stages of this month. Champions United had also sounded out Southampton with an interest in signing him.

However it now seems like they all will have to look elsewhere as DailyMail reports that late last week, he signed a new five-year contract extension with Southampton, ending all the rumors surrounding his future.

Shaw was himself delighted with the new contract as he said, “I’m very pleased to have finally signed it,”

“‘I’ve been here since I was eight and I’ve loved every single moment of it. I want to stay at this Club, and signing this contract means I’m here for another five years.”

With the Shaw transfer stories now put to bed, where will the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea look now? Will Mourinho put his plans for a left-back on the back burner or will he pursue someone else? He does have cover in Ryan Betrand and Arsenal have Nacho Monreal, Kieran Gibbs and Andre Santos to choose from so neither club is desperate for a new left back?
