Lukaku Picked Everton Over West Brom

Romelu Lukaku made a late surprise move out of Stamford Bridge on loan, after Chelsea decided to send the youngster for some more first team experience this season, leaving him with Everton and West Bromwich Albion as the two options, out of whom the Merseyside club won the race before the end of the transfer deadline day.

Chelsea have been involved in the transfer window heavily as expected, and have signed multiple players in different positions. Jose Mourinho’s return to the club was emphatic for the supporters, and the Portuguese boss has been trying to strengthen the squad ever since making the come back to Stamford Bridge after his successful spell at Real Madrid. Mourinho’s return brought about various uncertainties and left him with many decisions to make regarding different positions. The club’s heavy £50 million investment in striker Fernando Torres could not be overlooked despite the Spaniard’s lack of goals in England he was in scintillating form in the Confederations Cup -top scoring with 5 goals although all in the group stages. Mourinho decided to build the team around the striker’s strengths instead of selling him elsewhere. The signing of Demba Ba and Victor Moses in recent times added further stress on the shoulders of Mourinho, who had to get a few players off the books.

Andre Schurrle became the first signing for Mourinho, as he made his way through from Bayer Leverkusen in Germany. The attacker has been effective since his move, and Mourinho has already become a fan of the German international. The club were unsuccessful in signing Wayne Rooney from Manchester United, and that added pressure to bring in another striker of top quality. Mourinho then brought back a player who played under him at Inter Milan in 2009. Samuel Eto’o was signed by Chelsea from Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala, who were looking to get their highest paid player off the books for a low price.

This situation left no room for Lukaku, who came into the limelight when Chelsea sent him to West Bromwich Albion on loan last season, and he scored 17 goals in 20 appearances for the club. According to Metro, Lukaku had the option of resigning for West Brom, but it was Everton who eventually won the race.
