Lukaku Loaned To Everton – Why?

Well yesterday Chelsea did not add any more signings to their extensive list of summer additions with Christian Atsu from FC Porto being their last purchase. In a move which will surprise and disappoint many, Romelu Lukaku who scored 17 goals while on loan with West Brom last season was loaned out for the rest of the season to Everton joining Roberto Martinez’ new initiative at Goodison Park.

Seemingly, the powers that be at Stamford Bridge felt that with Fernando Torres, Demba Ba, Samuel Eto’o and Andre Schurrle as striking options, the young Lukaku would not get the chances in the first team he needs to continue his development. West Brom were very interested in bringing the striker back to the Hawthorns for another season as he was a huge success at the midlands club and a big fan favourite but clearly Mourinho and company felt that playing under Martinez at Everton would be better for his professional growth so he ended up on the Blue side of Merseyside.

Overall, the move does make sense but still it is very disappointing as what else does a player have to do to get a chance with Chelsea’s first team. Lukaku’s 17 goals, which included goals of all types – headers, goal-poacher tap-ins, long distance scores and powerful strikes, put him way ahead of Torres who only managed 8 League goals (he did add a bunch more in Europe to his credit).

Well we were looking forward to seeing the heights Lukaku could reach while playing with a superior supporting cast at Chelsea but that will have to wait another season now that he is off to Everton. Let’s hope the signings of Eto’o and Schurrle along with Torres and Ba deliver the goals we need and that Lukaku’s loan does not end up looking like a big mistake.
