Lukaku Happy To Compete With Rooney For Striking Role

Romelu Lukaku has declared that he does not fear the possibility of Wayne Rooney arriving at Chelsea and claimed he is content that it is the manager who will have all the say in picking the right first team as the new season draws closer. Chelsea have been revitalized with the arrival of Jose Mourinho, who is in his second spell at the club with less than a month to go until the season starts. The Blues will be looking to end the recent Manchester domination and go all out for the Barclays Premier League title this season, but it will not be an easy job for the Londoners. Rival clubs have been spending excessively in the market to improve their squads. Even though Chelsea have been assisted with three signings so far, Mourinho’s team needs firepower up front and Rooney is seen as the player to add spark in the attack.

Rooney has been consistently named in the headlines for his unrest at Manchester United, and new manager David Moyes’ statements about keeping the England international ready as a potential replacement in the case of an injury to Robin van Persie certainly did not help the cause. Rooney has always been a star player at the club, and his second transfer request in recent times are worrying signs for the United faithful.

Talking about Lukaku’s career, the 20-year old was signed by then Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas in August 2011 for an initial fee of £10 million. The club were not ready to keep the highly rated frontman without first team experience, and sent him to West Bromwich Albion, where he joined former Blues first team coach Steve Clark. Lukaku scored 17 goals in his 35 Premier League matches for the club, leaving Clark with a wish for another loan spell. However, the Blues officials had seen enough to welcome him back to the club.

According to Daily Mail, Lukaku will leave the squad decisions to the manager, and in regards to Rooney he said, “It is the manager’s choice. If he is part of our team I will welcome him with open arms.

“He is the manager and he has a vision of the way he wants to play,

“The players have to improve to do that. I certainly have it in me. When you are playing for a team like Chelsea, there is going to be competition. I like competition from the first time I came here.”

So it seems the mature Lukaku is ready to compete with all-comers for a spot in the Chelsea first team which can only be a good thing for the Blues.
