Luiz Blames English Mentality For Lack Of World Cup Success

According to the Daily Mail, David Luiz has spoken about England’s chances of winning the FIFA World Cup next year, and said that it is the lack of belief that is to blame for the Three Lions not progressing to the latter stages of the competition in the recent times despite the squad’s strength on paper.

Luiz made the big money move to Chelsea from Benfica as a strong centre back who was known for his ruthless attitude to defending. The charismatic defender has proven to be versatile all across the park, and has worked on different aspects of his game that one would normally not associate with a centre half. His free-kick taking prowess has been an additional asset to the starting eleven. This naturally meant his long range efforts on the ball have been spectacular, and Luiz can contribute as an attacker if the team needs one late in the game. However, due to his multitasking on the pitch, his positioning has suffered, and Luiz has faced criticism for not taking his primary task of defending as seriously as his other strengths. On the international front, Luiz has been an active participant in the squad through the pre-world cup campaign, leading the back-line with Paris St. Germain defender Thiago Silva another regular starter.

England have arguably had one of the best squads in the world full of players who ply their trade in one of the best leagues in the world. Roy Hodgson has a decent chance of bringing a trophy next year, but will face a stern fight from the Brazilians amongst others. With Wayne Rooney getting back to form, England have a chance of having success with their youngsters, who will have the benefit of Rooney’s experience of playing internationally.

Luiz pointed to the fact that in England, the squad is expected to get through the group stage and test the latter stages, but not win it outright. This, he believes, is the crux of the lack of success, something the Brazilians have used to their advantage.
