Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp was left unimpressed with Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez’s performance against Manchester City at the weekend.

The Argentinian international has gone off the boil in recent weeks after looking outstanding in his first few games for the Blues, and Redknapp says the playmaker seemed to be lacking confidence at the Etihad:

“I looked at Enzo in midfield and I will give him the benefit of the doubt, obviously because of the World Cup, but he just looks lost and I feel a bit sorry for him.”

It’s fair to say that Fernandez hasn’t been at his best for several matches now and it may not be a coincidence that he has struggled more since Frank Lampard took charge on an interim basis.

You don’t spend a club record £107m on a player, though, and simply judge them in the short term. Fernandez is one for the future, not just for the present, and it will be hoped that Lampard’s successor will get more out of him.

Pochettino should be the perfect mentor for Fernandez at Chelsea

As a fellow Argentine, the Blues’ next permanent manager should know more than most what makes Fernandez tick.

Pochettino also has the knack of unlocking the untapped potential in young players so if anyone is going to get the best out of the 22-year-old, it will be the former Tottenham boss.
