Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta missed the penalty shootout win against Southampton in the Carabao Cup last night due to a shoulder injury.
The 32-year-old picked up the issue in training earlier this week but manager Thomas Tuchel is optimistic that the defender will be in the matchday squad to face Newcastle this weekend.
Andreas Christensen was also absent yesterday evening after undergoing tooth surgery but the Danish international is likely to be back on the training pitch tomorrow.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek has a hip problem and the midfielder remains a doubt for the trip to St James’ Park on Saturday. Christian Pulisic (ankle), Timo Werner (hamstring) and Romelu Lukaku (ankle) are also in the same boat.
However, while N’Golo Kante was not in the squad for the Southampton game, Tuchel has said that the Frenchman should be ready to play against Newcastle after a muscular injury prevented him from facing Norwich last week.
