Lampard keen on high-profile signing this month

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has revealed his admiration for striker Edinson Cavani, who is a big target for the club this month.

Cavani, who is one of the world’s most prolific goalscorers, has seen his game time at PSG limited this season. He is out of contract in the summer, and is set to be allowed to leave with his move likely to be the most high-profile deal of the January transfer window.

With Chelsea’s transfer ban being lifted, a move for the striker was always going to be on the cards, but with the latest comments from manager Frank Lampard following the defeat to Newcastle this weekend, it seems a serious attempt could be made to sign Cavani.

“He’s a great player; I played against him and always loved his mentality and attitude, and his scoring record speaks for itself,” said Lampard.

“I’m not absolutely aware of what the situation is, so we’ll see.

“The idea of bringing in experience is something I’m certainly not absolutely looking away from, because sometimes the young players need a little bit of help, and if that’s the case then that may help us.”

Fighting with Chelsea over the signing of Cavani is fellow Premier League rival Manchester United, who are in desperate need of attacking reinforcements, and Spanish side Atletico Madrid who is reportedly the Uruguayan’s preferred destination.

But with the imminent departure of Olivier Giroud leaving Tammy Abraham and Michy Batshuayi Chelsea’s only real striking options, it seems Lampard will push to get a deal for a striker over the line.

“I don’t think Newcastle hastens anything, it’s just we couldn’t do any business in the summer window,” added Lampard.

“At this point it [finishing] is something we’ve seen as a bit of a problem in our home games so we’ve got to work hard with the group here, and then if we can improve in terms of goal scoring it’s for sure something we have to look at.”
