Lampard: It’s a great appointment as manager

A relaxed Frank Lampard revealed that Jose Mourinho has already made his presence felt even though it has been less than a month since the Portuguese manager has taken charge of proceedings at Stamford Bridge.

Mourinho made a remarkable comeback to London after he was offered the job for the second time by Russian owner Roman Abramovich. The experiment by the owner to give Roberto Di Matteo the job after he won UEFA Champions League in 2012, did not reap the rewards expected, and was given the sack a few months later. As Mourinho was contracted to Real Madrid, there was no possibility of him quitting his contract at the Santiago Bernabeu, and Abramovich decided to give Rafael Benitez the interim manager’s job. After a successful season of winning the UEFA Europa League, Benitez was signed by Napoli, making way for Mourinho to make a return to Chelsea.

Lampard has been one of the most consistent Barclays Premier League midfielders of all time, and his scoring record speaks volumes about his talent. A box-to-box midfielder with an eye for goal, Lampard proved critics wrong last season, and won the faith of the Benitez and the fans alike. The England international was part of the squad that won the Europa League, and signed a one year extension, to the delight of a manager who once termed him as one of the best in the world.

Chelsea are trying ever so hard to sign new world class players, and have done so in sealing a deal for Bayer Leverkusen attacker Andre Schurrle, who finally completed his move to the club. Lampard will also be joined by Vitesse Arnheim midfielder Marco van Ginkel, an exciting prospect who has been seen as a future replacement for the former.

With less than five weeks to the start of the new Premier League season, Chelsea are also still looking to sign a world class striker, with Edinson Cavani formerly on top of Mourinho’s wish list they will now be looking elsewhere as he has now signed with PSG, after the club also lost out on Radamel Falcao to Monaco.

According to London Evening Standard, Lampard was relieved to have broken Bobby Tambling’s club goal-scoring record, and said, “I’m relaxed now. It’s a nice weight off my shoulders. With the staying thing, everyone knew I wanted to and we got there in the end.”

“And with the goals thing, I really wanted to do it last season because of the crowd build-up, everyone was talking about it.”

“It would have been on my mind in the summer and carried into this season so it was fantastic to do it.

“I’m now just looking forward to enjoying the season. It’s a great appointment as manager, everyone knows that we all think that here. It’s going to be really exciting and I’m going into it with the same desire as all the others.”
