Kevin de Bruyne, who is currently on the pre-season tour with Chelsea, featured in their match against Malaysia XI. He was undoubtedly eager to make an impact and impress new boss Jose Mourinho in order to have a shot at breaking into the Blues’ starting 11 for the upcoming season.

He was lively during the game and was full value of his goal which was a spectacular strike. He scored the second of Chelsea’s 4 goals as he raced onto Romelu Lukaku’s headed flick and rifled home from 20 yards out. However, as he took his shot, his leg landed on the ground awkwardly and thus twisted horribly.

He was down straight away, waving at the sidelines to receive some medical attention as he knew that he was ruled out for this game, possibly for even the entire pre-season tour as he was being stretchered off. Metro reports that there were initial fears he could be sidelined for a long spell with a suspected knee ligament damage, however those fears evaporated as he was seen walking with only slight problems on the touchline in the second half.

What is unclear at this moment is for how long his injury will keep him out. At least it is not as bad as initially thought of, so he could make a speedy recovery and could, at the most, miss the initial few rounds of Chelsea’s season.

De Bruyne would definitely be gutted at sitting out the next pre-season games as he has lost his chance to further impress Mourinho, however he would also be encouraged to hear that his injury is not too bad. He will be eager to make a swift return now and hope to keep up that momentum which he had prior to this latest unfortunate setback.

Kevin de Bruyne has returned to London to receive the best care from the Chelsea medical staff so hopefully they can work their magic and get this exciting young Belgian back to fitness and vying for a spot in Mourinho’s squad again.
