KEEP OR LET GO: We Assess What The Future Holds For Gallagher, Broja, Gilmour, Colwill And Ampadu At Chelsea

We have now reached the halfway point of the season, and it is a good time to assess some of the players that Chelsea have sent out on loan.

Not every youngster will make it at the top level, and with the Blues unable to give opportunities to every starlet coming through the academy, they can better evaluate their talents by seeing them play at first-team level for other teams.

It is worked well in the past, especially with the likes of Mason Mount, Reece James and Trevoh Chalobah recently. With a lot of talk about Chelsea loanees such as Conor Gallagher, Armando Broja and others, we have decided to assess their chances of making it into Thomas Tuchel’s side.

Press the next page as we gauge the future prospects of five young players.

Conor Gallagher

The 21-year-old has been in excellent form during his loan spell at Crystal Palace, having scored seven goals and provided four assists in 21 appearances for Patrick Vieira’s side.

Reliable reports suggest that Tuchel is keen to have Gallagher back at Stamford Bridge ahead of next season so we should see him in a Chelsea shirt again.

Decision: KEEP

Armando Broja

The Albanian striker has made a big impact during his time at Southampton, so much so that manager Ralph Hasenhuttl has expressed a desire to keep the player on a permanent basis.

Other teams, including West Ham, are said to be pursuing Broja too but, as long as he finishes the campaign strongly, you would have to think that Tuchel would want to keep him around to see whether he can make an impact next campaign.

Decision: KEEP

Billy Gilmour

The Scotland international has undoubted natural ability but playing for a struggling team like Norwich has not really helped his development. With Canaries fans turning on him, it hasn’t been a pleasant experience for the 20-year-old.

Tuchel is expected to strengthen his midfield options in the summer, with Declan Rice and Aurelien Tchouameni touted as key targets. It means Gilmour is unlikely to get much game time if he stays, so another loan spell (to a team better suited to his style of play) is likely.

Decision: LOAN OUT

Levi Colwill

Big things are expected of the defender and the fact that he is a regular starter for Huddersfield in the Championship at just 18 shows you that the hype is justified.

With Chelsea likely to sign Jules Kounde from Sevilla and perhaps even Matthijs de Ligt from Juventus, Colwill may not get the time to develop in Chelsea’s first team next season. A Premier League loan, similar to Gallagher’s, could be the next step for the talented teenager.

Decision: LOAN OUT

Ethan Ampadu

Having been sent out on loan to Serie A side Venezia this campaign, the Welshman hasn’t exactly been forgotten but his development has stagnated somewhat. Many assumed he would eventually develop into a centre-half, but it appears he is a better fit for the holding midfield role.

With Billy Gilmour the next in line in terms of academy players, and with signings expected in that position this summer, you have to question whether Ampadu has a future at Stamford Bridge.

Decision: SELL
