Jose Mourinho’s Five Worst Signings As Chelsea Manager

After looking at Jose Mourinho’s five best signings for Chelsea last week, this time we will be going through the Portuguese’s worst decisions in the transfer market.

We have decided against including Andriy Shevchenko in this list as it is believed Mourinho was not involved in the Ukrainian moving to Stamford Bridge.

This may be the case for some of the others mentioned in our top five, but there is no way to be completely certain of that.

Press the next page as we go through Mourinho’s worst buys during his two spells in charge of the Blues.

Baba Rahman (£14m)

Signed at the start of Mourinho’s final season in charge of his second stint, the Ghanaian played just nine games before the Portuguese was sacked in December 2015.

Rahman played 23 matches during his first campaign at Chelsea but, incredibly, he hasn’t made an appearance since then despite still being contracted to the London club. Injury and loan spells have meant he has rarely been seen on the training pitch at Cobham for the last four years.

Juan Cuadrado (£27m Plus Mo Salah on loan)

In hindsight, this probably looks like the worst deal during Mourinho’s time in charge. However, not many thought Salah was good enough when he arrived at Stamford Bridge so his temporary move to Italy wasn’t a surprise.

However, Cuadrado was a major disappointment. The Colombian made only 15 appearances after joining in February 2015 before being shipped out on loan himself to Juventus just six months later.

Falcao (Loan with £38m purchase option)

After his disappointing loan stint at Manchester United, it was a massive surprise when the Colombian international arrived on loan in July 2015.

Falcao made all but one of his 12 appearances for Chelsea under Mourinho before his sacking, with injuries and poor form limiting his game time for the Blues. He was shipped back to Monaco as the club decided against taking up their option to buy him.

Felipe Luis (£15.8m)

On the face of it, this signing should have worked. The Brazilian was part of a strong defence under Diego Simeone at Atletico Madrid and he should have fitted in nicely under Mourinho.

However, the Chelsea manager rarely used him, opting to play Cesar Azpilicueta instead during their title-winning campaign. Luis was sent back to Atletico just a year after joining.

Mateja Kezman (£5.3m)

The Serbian had been scoring goals for fun in the Eredivisie for PSV Eindhoven and it seemed like good business, considering the relatively low transfer fee.

However, after hitting the back of the net just seven times in 41 games, he was offloaded to Atletico Madrid within 12 months of arriving.

Kezman, now 41 years old, has since gone on to become a Super Agent and represents the likes of Lazio’s Sergej Milinkovic-Savic who United are reportedly interested in.
