Jose Mourinho’s Five Best Signings As Chelsea Manager

Jose Mourinho had two very successful spells in charge of Chelsea and he also made some superb signings during his time at Stamford Bridge which helped him build two formidable squads.

The Portuguese had an eye for signing winners; players that had the mentality to play on the biggest stage and come up with crucial contributions when it mattered most.

All of the names on this list won a Premier League title, as well as a host of other trophies in their time as Chelsea players.

Press the next page as we go through Mourinho’s five best signings as Blues boss:

Ricardo Carvalho

The Portuguese defender’s signing from Porto was a vital part of Mourinho’s early success at Chelsea. He formed a formidable partnership with John Terry which conceded just 15 goals during their first title win in the 2004/05 season.

Carvalho went on to win three Premier League titles and two League cups during his six years at Stamford Bridge.

Cesc Fabregas

We could have easily included Michael Essien instead but the Spaniard just edged the Ghanaian due to his influence on the 2014/15 title-winning season.

Fabregas was signed from Barcelona and was the missing piece of the jigsaw, along with Diego Costa, which helped Mourinho secure his third Premier League trophy for Chelsea.

Ashley Cole

Chelsea paid £5m plus William Gallas for the left-back in 2006 and it proved to be a fantastic piece of business for the London club, although it must be said that Mourinho wasn’t the one who would get to see the best of the fullback in a Blues shirt.

Cole won the 2009/10 Premier League under Carlo Ancelotti, as well as winning both the Champions League and Europa League during his time at Stamford Bridge.

Diego Costa

The Spaniard was a perfect fit for Mourinho’s style and, along with Fabregas, his signing in 2014 was instrumental in securing another Premier League title.

Costa scored 20 goals in just 26 league games in the 2014/15 campaign, with him being selected in the PFA’s Team of the Year. He went on to more success in 2016/17, leading the line as Antonio Conte’s team finished top of the table.

Didier Drogba

Of course, no list would be complete without the Ivorian international. The player was already on Chelsea’s radar before Mourinho arrived but the Portuguese was the one who signed off on the £24m record signing.

164 goals, five Premier League titles, four FA Cups, three League Cups and that memorable Champions League win in 2012 in which Drogba played such a crucial part, sums up his impact at the London club.
