“It’s Been Done Before…” Shearer Makes Champions League Prediction As Chelsea Make Lampard Decision

BBC pundit Alan Shearer says he wouldn’t rule out Chelsea winning the Champions League with the Blues set to appoint Frank Lampard as caretaker manager.

Roberto Di Matteo was hired on an interim basis after Andre Villa-Boas’s sacking in 2012 and went on to win the competition. Shearer believes there is a possibility of a repeat this season:

“From Frank’s point of view, I think it’s a no-brainer. I think he wouldn’t have had to think about it, for that long because, at the highest level, he is probably going to struggle to get back in. But they are in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, you just never know. It’s been done before at Chelsea.”

Stranger things have happened but it’s probably wise to keep a lid on expectations for now. Unlike the 2012 side, which was full of experienced players (including Lampard), this current crop haven’t been together that long.

It would be asking a lot of Lampard to get this team working like a well-oiled machine with the first leg of the quarter-final against holders Real Madrid just days away. The Blues head out to Spain next Wednesday, which will likely be Lampard’s second game in charge if his appointment is confirmed ahead of the Wolves match this weekend.
