Ian Wright Slams ‘Disgraceful’ Costa

Chelsea’s summer has been nothing short of a disaster in terms of poor media attention. The ongoing saga with Diego Costa continues to rumble on, and the forward’s refusal to return to training this season and threatening strike action is just the latest of Antonio Conte’s worries.

Former Arsenal striker and Premier League legend Ian Wright has followed the story just like every football fan. The legend has branded Costa’s actions as “disgraceful”, saying he doesn’t understand how players can get away with that sort of behaviour these days.

The 28-year-old forward is currently in Brazil, where he has threatened to stay for an entire year after being told he is not part of Antonio Conte’s plans at Chelsea. The Spanish international feels he has been treated like a “criminal” and wants to join former club Atletico Madrid, something he says Chelsea are blocking.

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte supposedly sent a text to Costa in June that stated he was not in his plans for the coming season, but Costa insists that he has been told to return and train with the reserves.

“I don’t understand how players can get away with that behaviour,” said Wright.

“It’s disgraceful the way he is behaving,” Wright told BBC Radio 5 live’s The Monday Night Club.

“Surely he’s got to come back here, so if the manager changes his mind he’s there. He’s earning a fortune at Chelsea. Can Atletico Madrid even afford him?”
