Ian Wright Singles Outs Chelsea Star For Criticism As He Claims “There’s No Togetherness” In Pochettino’s Squad

BBC pundit Ian Wright has expressed disappointment with Enzo Fernandez’s actions during Chelsea’s loss to Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final.

The midfielder decided to backheel a shot at goal in the first half despite Cole Palmer being in acres of space to score, and Wright claims it demonstrates the lack of team spirit inside Mauricio Pochettino’s squad:

“You do look at it and you feel, we spoke about Liverpool and their togetherness, Chelsea you feel the disconnect with the fans, what’s going on upstairs, with the players, now the manager is under pressure, you just feel like there’s no togetherness.”

“You rightly mentioned the backheel from Enzo in the box, in a final, you lay it to someone and they score a tap-in, it’s what a team does, when you’re playing for a team. For him to not do that just shows where they are at the moment, they’re all over the place.”

Fernandez will not be pleased with his performance at Wembley

Wright is correct to point to the Argentinian international’s poor decision-making against Liverpool. It simply wasn’t good enough from the World Cup winner.

It wasn’t only the backheel where Fernandez was found wanting either. He gave away possession an incredible 21 times across the 120 minutes.

The lack of team spirit in the Chelsea squad has to be addressed

The fact that the Blues were unable to beat what was a much-weakened Liverpool side does raise further questions about the desire within the team.

You do feel that there is a lack of accountability in the squad, which may only be addressed if more experienced senior players are signed. For now, Pochettino will have to make do with what he has got.

If he is to save his job, winning the FA Cup and/or finishing in the European places is crucial.
