Ian Wright Identifies The Three Summer Signings Chelsea Have To Make If They Are To Compete For Trophies

BBC pundit Ian Wright says Chelsea must sign a goalkeeper, a holding midfielder and a striker if they are to become a force in English football again.

Despite spending £600m in the last two transfer windows, Wright is somewhat perplexed that the Blues haven’t addressed key positions, and the Arsenal legend believes more signings will be required to get the club competing at the top end of the table:

“They’ve spent [over] half a billion pounds and they still for me need a goalkeeper if I’m being totally honest. They still need a No.6 and they need a focal point centre forward. They’re nowhere near that. Since the [Roman] Abramovich era it feels like they’ve spent that money and they’re still nowhere.”

Considering the restrictions placed on the club due to Financial Fair Play regulations, Chelsea will probably have to sell a fair few players in order to fund new additions this summer.

Recruiting a new number nine, as well as a goalkeeper and midfielder, won’t come cheap. Victor Osimhen is known to be high on the Blues’ list of targets and he could cost as much as £13om. A top-class goalkeeper could top £50m while a midfielder will probably require an outlay of £80m to £100m. That’s a minimum of £250m that will have to be invested, so the club do have a big job on their hands reshaping the squad.
