How Chelsea Could Miss Out On The Champions League Even If They Finish Fourth

UEFA have confirmed that the club that finishes fourth could miss out on qualifying for the Champions League next campaign.

It’s highly unlikely to happen, but if two teams, who finish outside of the top four, win the Champions League and the Europa League respectively, the team in fourth would not get a Champions League place.

UEFA only permits five clubs from the same country into the Champions League with seven teams in total able to play in both European competitions.

The worst-case scenario for Chelsea would be Arsenal finishing sixth and winning the Europa League, while Manchester United or Tottenham finishing fifth and winning the Champions League.

Of course, if the Blues triumph over Dynamo Kiev and go on to win the Europa League themselves, then they would be guaranteed a place in the group stage of Europe’s premier competition next season.

Still, it is far too early to anticipate which scenario will occur at the end of the campaign. Chelsea are currently two points off fourth. They could even catch third-place Spurs, who would be just two points ahead of them if Maurizio Sarri’s side win their game in hand.
