Hoddles Calls On “Nice” Chelsea Star To Get Stuck In And “Hurt Himself” To Make Impact In Games

Former Chelsea manager Glenn Hoddle wants summer signing Kai Havertz to make more of an effort to get into the penalty box so he can score more goals.

The BT Sport pundit fears the German international is not being assertive enough and wants the 21-year-old to get involved in games more by making lung-busting runs forward:

“He is a good player and there is more to come, but he looks like a character who needs a bit of time to settle. It is almost as if he just wants to be a nice player. For me, he has to be a little bit more assertive. Get himself in the box, hurt himself a little bit in the sense of his running ability to get in the box. And I think he will score goals.”

Havertz’s form remains a major concern. He has had to recover from the virus over the past month so that would have affected his energy, which could have had a knock-on effect on performances.

However, even before that, he wasn’t making the type of impact on games many had hoped from a £72m signing. It could simply be that the midfielder needs more time to adapt to English football but fans, in general, are not exactly a patient bunch.

As Hoddle says, though, there is more that Havertz could do in order to make his mark and hopefully, over the Christmas period, we will begin to see the best of him.
