Havertz’s Former Coach Raises Doubts Over Lampard’s Handling Of Chelsea’s Record Signing

Bayer Leverkusen manager Peter Bosz has questioned why Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has benched Kai Havertz in recent league games.

The Dutchman thinks that Lampard needs to have a set idea about where he wants to play the German international and then give him a run in the first team:

“I can see why Chelsea brought him in but I cannot yet see the exact idea Frank Lampard has for him. It’s really good that he protects him in the press, though. But in the end, you must deliver, you must score goals and make goals. For a €100 million transfer you must play, and he isn’t.”

With Havertz not performing, it’s difficult to justify starting him at the moment, but Bosz is right that after spending such a sizeable amount of money on the 21-year-old, it is Lampard’s job to make things work. He is the club’s joint record signing after all, and you can’t really justify keeping him on the bench for too long considering the amount the Blues paid.

Of course, the attacking midfielder may just need more time. The player has taken a while to recover from the effects of the virus and it could be the case that we’ll start seeing improved performances from him in the second half of the season.
