Gary Cahill defends Manchester City star after “difficult week”

Gary Cahill has defended ‘great character’ Raheem Sterling after what he described as a ‘difficult week’ for the Manchester City star.

Cahill and Sterling were both on international duty yesterday afternoon with England as Gareth Southgate’s men beat Nigeria 2-1 in their penultimate game before this summer’s World Cup.

Cahill opened the scoring for the Three Lions after just seven minutes, before Harry Kane doubled the host’s advantage just before the break with a fortunate strike under Nigeria keeper Francis Uzoho.

Alex Iwobi’s second half strike then completed the scoring on a hit-and-miss day for England at Wembley.

Sterling – who laid on Harry Kane’s goal yesterday afternoon – has come under heavy criticism from the press this week after it was revealed he chose to get a large tattoo of an ‘M16 assault rifle’ on his leg in dedication to his late father who was shot and killed when Sterling was jus two-years-old.

To add to his worries, Sterling was booked in the second half for simulation, however Cahill has praised the Manchester City star’s character through what has been a trying time.

“It is to be expected but at the same time it would be nice if it was positive,” Cahill said of the stories regarding England players leading into a big tournament.

“So credit to him he has had to come over that but it is to be expected for whatever reason. I think first and foremost he has conducted himself fantastically well this week, he has managed that situation very well.

“He has come out today in front of a huge crowd and performed very well. He created quite a few chances… [there are] no issues, he played very well today, the lads are delighted and the goals are just around the corner for him I’m sure.”
