Four Reasons Why Signing Kasper Schmeichel Would Be An Inspired Move By Frank Lampard

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard is an admirer of Leicester City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, according to the Times.

The Blues are actively seeking a new number one to replace the hapless Kepa Arrizabalaga but they have yet to settle on a priority target for the position.

Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak, Ajax’s Andre Onana, Manchester United’s Dean Henderson and Burnley’s Nick Pope have all been linked in recent weeks, but no formal offers for a keeper have been made yet.

So would Schmeichel be a good alternative? Press the next page as we go through our reasons why the 33-year-old could be an inspired purchase.

Experience Without Costing The Earth

In an ideal world, Jan Oblak would be the club’s main target for the number one spot but, with Chelsea devoting a lot of their resources to signing Kai Havertz, it’s unrealistic to expect the Blues to shell out the €120m they would need to spend on the Atletico keeper.

Schmeichel has spent the last six years as first choice for Leicester in the top flight, and in that time he has won the Premier League title. The Foxes may still demand a sizeable sum for the Danish international but nowhere near the amount it would cost to get Oblak.

Schmeichel Is Consistent

Kepa’s form has dipped markedly. The Spaniard’s save percentage in his first campaign at Stamford Bridge was 68% in the Premier League. That dropped to just 54% last season.

In contrast, Schmeichel’s consistency is a standout quality. His save percentage has not dropped below 65% over the past five years in the league, and he managed to save 70% of the shots he faced in the 2019/20 campaign.

He Is A Leader

Schmeichel captained Leicester for most of last season in the absence of Wes Morgan. He is a vocal figure in the backline and is not afraid to speak his mind out on the pitch.

Lampard has noted that there is a lack of communication among Chelsea’s players during games and having someone who possesses leadership qualities like the Dane could prove invaluable.

Schmeichel Is Keen On The Move

The Times claim that the keeper is open to leaving Leicester after nine years as he looking for a team that is playing in the Champions League.

If Schmeichel was keen on staying at the King Power Stadium, a move would prove very difficult but if the 33-year-old is available this summer, Chelsea could do a lot worse than signing him up.
