FOUR Reasons Why Chelsea Are So Keen To Wrap Up A Deal For Christopher Nkunku Now

Chelsea are working hard to wrap up the signing of RB Leipzig’s Christopher Nkunku well ahead of the next transfer window, according to multiple reports.

Some suggest that the France international has already signed a pre-contract agreement, although others (at the time of writing) say things haven’t quite got to that stage yet.

Whatever the case may be, it seems a deal for Nkunku is likely to be agreed soon, with the player set to move to Stamford Bridge at the end of the season.

Press the next page as we explain why Chelsea are so desperate to sign the forward.

1) Seeing Off The Competition

The existence of a €60m (£52m) release clause (which can be triggered next summer) means plenty of top European clubs would have been in the mix for Nkunku’s signature.

Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal, Real Madrid and the Frenchman’s former club, Paris Saint-Germain, have all been credited with an interest. By paying a slightly higher fee upfront now, Chelsea can head off any potential challenge to secure the forward’s services.

2) Nkunku Is A Complete Forward

The 24-year-old started out as a number 10 at PSG before progressing to become a winger and a number nine during his time at Leipzig. The reason he can play all of those positions is because of his skill set.

If we look at all the forwards in Europe’s top five leagues over the last year, Nkunku is in the top 10% for goals, assists, passes completed, key passes, passes into the penalty area, progressive passes, dribbles completed, carries, and even interceptions.

3) He Provides So Much Flexibility

Nkunku’s all-round game means he is able to play in multiple different systems, without his game being adversely affected. It suggests he would be perfectly suited for a manager like Graham Potter.

In his first two matches in charge, the 47-year-old has played 3-5-2 and 4-2-2, and he is likely to mix things up in future matches too. Nkunku will be comfortable in any system as a winger, striker or no.10.

4) Nkunku Is Ready To Make The Step Up

After the difficulties that both Timo Werner and (to a lesser extent) Kai Havertz had with adapting to the Premier League, there is an understandable concern among Chelsea supporters about shelling out on another Bundesliga player.

However, as we have seen with Erling Haaland at Manchester City, the transition from Germany can go smoothly if handled correctly. Nkunku is arguably a more complete player than either Werner or Havertz and, for that reason, any concerns about the player flopping in England should be given short shrift.
