Four Centre Back Options That Lampard Could Consider As Chelsea Look To Revamp Their Defence

Chelsea conceded 54 goals in 38 league games last season. That is not a defensive record that will enable them to challenge for the title next campaign.

Blues boss Frank Lampard will be very aware of the team’s failings at the back, and he will almost certainly be looking to address the issue in the transfer market this summer.

West Ham’s Declan Rice is seen as the potential solution, although it would still be a surprise decision considering he has played most of his senior career so far as a holding midfielder.

So what other alternatives could Lampard consider? Press the next page as we go through four potential options the London club may look to sign to reinforce the defence.

Diego Carlos

The Sevilla defender is in huge demand this summer, with reports in Spain suggesting that both Liverpool and Manchester City are interested in the Brazilian.

However, Carlos’s release clause is €75m (£68m), which would probably make him as costly as Rice. Considering the Sevilla centre-back is 27 years of age, Lampard would be opting for experience if he were to sign him.

Milan Skriniar

Reports in Italy suggest the 25-year-old could be available for below €65m (£59m). He was subject to a bid from Manchester City for the same figure last summer, but the Slovakian has struggled for form somewhat this season.

Even so, Skriniar is equally comfortable playing in a back four or a back three and, considering Lampard’s tendency to switch systems, having someone as adaptable as the Inter Milan defender could be ideal.

Pau Torres

The Villarreal centre-half does have a pretty low release clause, at €50m (£46m), and with the defender still only 23 years of age, he is one for the future.

Torres is being pursued by the likes of Barcelona, Arsenal and Manchester City, but he has had just one season in Spain’s top flight, and Lampard may feel he needs someone who can come in to be a leader at the back.

Gabriel Magalhaes

Having balance is a vital part of playing out from the back, and Lampard currently doesn’t have a left-footed centre-back in the squad. The Lille defender could be a solution to that problem.

Gabriel is believed to be available for a relatively modest price, at around €25m (£23m), and the 22-year-old has been given permission to leave if a club makes a satisfactory bid for him this summer.
