Former Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel is in talks with the FA over the England manager job after Lee Carsley ruled himself out of the appointment.
Carsley took over from Gareth Southgate to manage the team on an interim basis but revealed that he did not apply for the full-time job. According to Sky Sports, Tuchel is in pole position for the job.
The former Chelsea boss has been without a job since May when he left Bayern Munich, the German coach has also been touted for the Manchester United job.
The Red Devils’ interest in Tuchel could provide a reason as to why the FA have accelerated talks with him to become the England manager as they may want to land him before United.
However, Tuchel isn’t the only manager that the FA want to target, but, he is currently in the best position to take over the job as the FA speak to his representatives.
Former Chelsea boss Tuchel ‘second choice’ to Pep Guardiola
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola was the first choice for the FA who did enquire about him, but it seems any chance of landing the Spaniard has calmed in recent weeks.
Guardiola’s contract at City runs out at the end of the season, but the club feels more and more confident that they can keep hold of Guardiola and land him on a new contract.
Therefore, Tuchel is now the front-runner ahead of Graham Potter, Eddie Howe and Jurgen Klopp who have all been tipped for the role also.
Manchester United held interest in Thomas Tuchel
Chelsea’s Premier League rivals Manchester United had considered Thomas Tuchel as a possible successor to Erik Ten Hag should the club have sacked the Dutchman.
However, it seems as though the higher-ups at Old Trafford believe in Ten Hag and have decided to give him longer to try to right the ship at the club.
Tuchel now looks poised for a move back to England after he spent one and a half years at Stamford Bridge where he won the Champions League in the 2020/21 season.
