Former Chelsea hero consoles struggling Morata

Former Chelsea striker Diego Costa has said that he hopes struggling striker Alvaro Morata will find his top form again soon after what he described as a “bad time” for the Spain international.

Costa, who was a fan favourite at Stamford Bridge, left the club last summer after a public fall-out with manager Antonio Conte.

The Spaniard re-joined former club Atletico Madrid in January having agreed a £57 million back in September – however was unable to join up with his new club due to their at the time ongoing transfer ban.

Now back in action however, Costa’s return to Spain has proved fruitful for both club and player. In 14 games for Atleti’ has scored six goals and produced two assists – an impressive return for man out of action for the previous six months.

The fortunes of Costa’s international team-mate Alvaro Morata have been quite different however. The Chelsea striker has found the net just once since Boxing Day last year.

Costa however believe’s it’s only a matter of time till the former Real Madrid man finds his shooting boots again.

“I miss Morata because we get on well,” Costa added.

“Competition is always good. Morata has been having a bad time there but he is back now scoring goals and I hope he comes back with us and we can play together.”

Playing together may not come quite as soon as Costa hopes however, after the Brazilian born striker was left out of Julen Lopetegui’s most recent Spain squad.

Lopetegui opted to drop Costa for Valencia’s Rodrigo, however Costa has insists he knew his lack of game time would prevent a call-up this time, but still aims to make this summer’s World Cup.

“The coach (Julen Lopetegui) was always very clear with me that if I was not playing then it would be impossible for me to be called up.

“But he also said that if I was playing well then the door would be open to me and I’m grateful to him for that.”
