Chelsea are now favourites to sign Bayern Munich defender David Alaba, according to reports in the Spanish media.
Manager Frank Lampard is said to be the driving force behind the decision to sign the Austrian international and he has asked director Marina Granovskaia to make an approach for the centre-back in January.
Alaba is unlikely to sign a new deal with Bayern and will be able to speak to foreign clubs in the New Year about a free transfer next summer. His agent Pini Zahavi has reportedly already offered the player to the likes of Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus but the Blues are convinced their offer will be the strongest. Supporters on Twitter are excited about the 28-year-old’s potential arrival:
For free this is a brilliant transfer, really hope it happens

It is thought that Lampard intends to use Alaba as a centre-half, rather than as a fullback, which would make sense as he would be directly competing with Ben Chilwell otherwise. Having a player who has won the Bundesliga nine times and the Champions League twice would add a great deal of experience to Chelsea’s backline.
