Five Things You Need To Know About Robin Gosens As Chelsea Consider Move For Atalanta Star

Chelsea have been linked with a whole host of left-backs over the last few months, with the latest being Atalanta’s Robin Gosens.

The Blues will face competition for the 25-year-old with Lyon and Inter Milan also said to be keen on the player.

Gosens has been one of the key players for Atalanta, as they sit fourth in the Serie A table, and his talent has come to the attention of some of Europe’s top teams.

Gosens has been playing as a wingback

It has been widely reported that the German is a left-back but the vast majority of his games for Atalanta this season have been as a wingback.

As a result, Gosens has scored eight goals and provided five assists in 30 appearances. He would very much be in a similar mould to Marcos Alonso.

He has dual nationality

Gosens was born in Germany but has a Dutch father, so he is eligible to play for both the Netherlands and the country of his birth.

While he started out in the youth ranks at three different clubs in Germany, it was only when he joined Vitesse Arnhem in 2012 that his career began to get going.

Gosens was a late bloomer

Despite being 25 years of age, the fullback only moved to a big European league in 2017. He spent three years in Vitesse’s youth team, with a loan spell at Dordrecht.

His real first-team breakthrough came at Heracles when he moved there on a free transfer in 2015. Two successful seasons in the Eredivisie then led to his big break at Atalanta.

He is yet to be capped by his country at any level

Despite being part of a successful Atalanta side which has finished seventh and third over the past two seasons, Gosens has not been capped at senior level by either Germany or the Netherlands.

In fact, the defender has not played for any country even at youth level. That may change soon, though, with Germany boss Joachim Low having confirmed that he would have called him up for friendlies in March.

Gosens could be available relatively cheaply

Reports suggest that Atalanta may consider bids for the left-back at around the £30m mark. Their business in the transfer market also suggests they’d be open to selling up.

The Serie A side are reportedly interested in Wolfsburg fullback Paulo Otavio, while they also signed Lennart Czyborra in the January transfer window.
