Finally Clarification On Chelsea’s Goalkeeping Situation (Sort Of…)

The 22-year-old shot-stopper, Thibaut Courtois has spent three remarkable seasons on loan at Atletico Madrid from Chelsea and has seen his stock rise dramatically, with many hailing him to be one of the best goalkeepers in the world while winning trophies such as the Copa Del Rey, the Europa League, La Liga and he just missed out on the Champions League.

There has been much speculation regarding his future with many Chelsea supporters wanting him to come back to London and challenge current first-choice Cech for the number one position. However, he has made it clear that he will not be anyone’s number two and would rather stay at Atletico than be sitting on the bench at Chelsea.

It has emerged that Cech, Golden Glove winner of the 2013-14 season, will remain as first-choice goalie next season, even though he may miss the start of it with a shoulder injury. Courtois will spend another season on loan before coming back to take the number one mantle from Cech ahead of the 2015-16 season, according to the Daily Mail. This suggests that the 32 year old Cech only has one more outstanding season in him when he likely has at least 5 more at the top of the game but Chelsea cannot risk losing a man in Courtois who could be their goalkeeper for the next 10-15 years. If Cech is happy to stay and contest the number one position it could work but either way the Chelsea goal is one position which is well taken care of.

So the solution going forward is Courtois will also be offered a bumper new deal with the assurance that he will be Chelsea’s number one in 2015-16 and he will go out on loan again for the 2014-15 season likely with Atletico you would think. The future of Mark Schwarzer remains uncertain with his Blues contract having expired and no news of an extension offered as yet but the Australian did not do much wrong in his limited appearances for Chelsea so you could see him being offered another one year deal to provide cover as a number 2. What happens to Petr Cech in 2015-16 in the big unknown but the legendary keeper deserves to be treated with the utmost respect after his stellar service for Chelsea.
