Fernando Torres Heading Back To Atletico – A No-Brainer?

Torres was brought up and nurtured by Atletico in their academy since his teenage days, and he went on to make over 200 appearances for them up until 2007, when he left his boyhood club to arrive on English shores as Liverpool broke the bank to sign the Spanish striker. Torres slotted perfectly into the team and went on to become one of the best strikers in Europe.

He then left Merseyside to join the millionaires at Chelsea on Transfer Deadline Day in 2011, which was perhaps his worst career decision so far. Arriving with an insane £50 million price tag, he has struggled severely since joining the Blues and his form has plummeted since then. He is still struggling to find his feet at Stamford Bridge, and has now fallen down the pecking order, with Senegal international Demba Ba being preferred over the 28-year old.

There have been stories doing the rounds that perhaps Torres’ former club, Atletico Madrid, are interested in bringing their prodigal son back. According to Metro.co.uk, to support these reports Atletico’s boss, Simeone, spoke to the media about a possible return of Torres, to which he revealed, “Fernando and I were team-mates here, I know how important he can be for Atletico,”

“Fernando knows about the club’s history, what it means to play here and I don’t need to speak about his ability.”

“He now plays elsewhere, so anything would have to wait until the season is over. Only then can we see who is available and who could do well here.”

Chelsea are looking to cut their losses and are believed to be ready to offload Torres for a paltry £15 million. Atletico too look set for an influx of money in the summer, as they are on course for UEFA Champions League qualification, along with a possible big money sale of superstar Radamel Falcao. Therefore, Atletico could well afford the £15 million asking price.

Do you think that it will be a good move for Torres to return back to his roots in an attempt to kick start his ailing career?
