Fernando Torres – El Nino Returns To His Best

Fernando Torres – El Nino Returns To His Best

When Roman Abramovich smashed the Premier League transfer record and signed Fernando Torres from rivals Liverpool in the winter transfer window of 2011, the expectations on the Spanish striker were enormous considering his £50 million transfer fee. To say the striker has failed to deliver on his reputation and former glories in a Liverpool shirt is one of the understatements of the decade.

Anyway, maybe the tide is finally turning in El Nino’s favour as in the Champions League match against Schalke in Gelsenkirken (incidentally where Mourinho won his 1st CL title with Porto) on Tuesday night, Torres scored a good goal in the 5th minute to mark his 100th game in a Chelsea shirt. He looked like the player who regularly made United’s so called Premiership’s best central defensive partnership of the noughties of Ferdinand and Vidic look like two traffic pylons in his Liverpool days, making explosive runs, pulling defenders out of position and generally looking like the world class striker that he is.

Torres hit the corner of the upright with a great header after the half from a Lampard cross, before adding his second with a simple finish from Hazard’s ball on 68 minutes. Torres was worthy of a hat-trick and almost got one when Hazard could have squared the ball for the Spaniard in the closing minutes but chose to finish himself for the 3-0 Chelsea lead.

Torres had not scored in the Champions League or the Premier League so far this season but at least he has got off the mark in the Champions League as he lead his team from the first minutes of the game until he was subbed for Eto’o in the final minutes.

I really believe we are seeing the resurrection of one of football’s supreme talents and I think we will see great things from Torres as the season progresses as clearly from his selection tonight Mourinho is a believer and a supporter and when you have the backing of the Portuguese manager good things tend to happen for you.

Mark my words Fernando Torres is BACK, he has pace to burn, he is playing unselfishly for the team and is playing with a smile on his face, which all bodes extremely well for the Blues. With El Nino back to his best the Premier League title is well within Chelsea’s grasp.
