Ferdinand Claims Lampard Signing Has Already “Repaid” His Hefty Price Tag

Former England defender Rio Ferdinand believes Chelsea forward Kai Havertz has already gone down in the club’s history books after his goals in the Champions League and Club World Cup finals.

The German was signed by Frank Lampard for £72m in 2020, with many feeling that he hasn’t lived up to the sizeable transfer fee, but Ferdinand says scoring two winners in major finals means he doesn’t have to do another thing in a Blues shirt to go down as a successful purchase:

“He doesn’t have to kick a ball ever again in a Chelsea shirt, he’s repaid the £70m plus price tag now. He’s scored two of the biggest goals in the history of the club. You don’t have to do no more! Shut down, undo your boots, take ’em off, chill! It’s not gonna happen but listen. If he doesn’t play another game for Chelsea, he goes down in folklore.”

Ferdinand is correct to some extent. Havertz has stepped up in two big moments to secure important trophies but that doesn’t mean he should rest on his laurels.

For the most part, the 22-year-old has flattered to deceive when he has started Premier League games and, while the player undoubtedly has time on his side, you would hope to see more consistency from him in the not too distant future.
