Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta has urged fans to be patient with new signing Ross Barkley after the former Everton star’s debut against Arsenal in mid-week.
Barkley came on for his first performance as a Blue in the Carabao Cup clash, replacing Willian in the first-half after the Brazilian suffered an unfortunate injury.
Coming on with the scores at 1-1, Barkley however as unable to inspire Antonio Conte’s side to victory, and was slammed by fans and his manager for what was a lacklustre debut.
Azpilicueta however has urged fans to be patient with the Chelsea new boy, and believes he will prove himself to become a key player for the Blues in the future.
“Ross came with a great attitude, really working hard to adapt to the team,” said Azpilicueta. “We know he is coming back from a long injury. He played with the Under-23s last week and then he came on straight away without even warming up last night, so he is on the right path and I am sure he will be very important for the team.
“Patience is important with him. He is coming back from a seven-month injury and he is in a new club, but from what I have seen in training he is working very hard and trying to get into the team. We have to give him time because I am sure he will be very important.
“We know how he is as a player and a person, and in the next few weeks we have really important games and we need everyone at 120 per cent.”
