Essien Wanting To Follow “Daddy” Mourinho Back

Ghana international, Michael Essien was brought to Chelsea initially back in 2005 by Mourinho himself for a hefty £24.4million fee from French outfit Lyon, when the Portugese was first in charge at Stamford Bridge. Mourinho then moved on to Inter Milan and then to Real Madrid. Essien stayed put at Chelsea and is still plying his trade at the London club.

Essien was struggling with injuries prior to last season and was hence firstly on the treatment table and then was unable to break into the first team and maintain his place. As a result, game time was hard to come by for the 30-year old. Mourinho came to his rescue as he plucked him out of Chelsea and brought him to Real Madrid for a season-long loan which just expired. Essien was used in multiple positions in the Real Madrid team. Along with his traditional holding midfielder role, he was deployed in either side of defense in a full-back position along with in the heart of the defense as a center-back.

Following Mourinho’s decision to quit Madrid in the summer, he has been intensely tipped to make a dramatic return to Chelsea in the coming weeks. Current Chelsea players like Frank Lampard, Juan Mata, John Terry and Romelu Lukaku are doing their bit by talking up Mourinho and revealing their excitement to work under the ‘Special One’. Essien has joined in the chorus as he was reported by SkySports as saying that he is stoked to play for Mourinho for an unprecedented third time.

“We have a very good relationship,” said Essien, quoted in The Sun.”

“I understand him very well.”

“Daddy knows I can play in any position he wants me to, except goalkeeper.”

Do you see Mourinho coming to Chelsea again and the Essien-Mourinho partnership being re-established next season? If yes, then will this reunion help Chelsea challenge for the league title next season following a mixed season of sorts under Rafael Benitez?
